Can 450 Year Old Leadership Lessons Really Enlighten Business and Personal Leadership in the 21st Century?
Danville, CA (PRWeb) January 9, 2007 -- Catholics@Work, a fellowship of individuals who explore how to actively live one's beliefs in the workplace, (http://www.catholicsatwork.org), today announced its February 2007 breakfast meeting will feature Mr. Chris Lowney. Lowney will discuss how understanding history is more relevant today than ever before. The back drop of emerging markets, the development of new media and technology, and a growing doubt that traditional values are no longer relevant, is similar to the backdrop that existed 450 years ago when one of the greatest global companies was being launched -- the Jesuits. Lowney, a former Jesuit, was named a Managing Director of J.P. Morgan & Co. while still in his thirties and held senior positions in New York, Tokyo, Singapore and London. He served on Morgan's Asia-Pacific, European and Investment Banking Management Committees, accumulating a wealth of multinational experience at a company regularly ranked one of "America's Most Admired Companies" by Fortune magazine.
The Catholics@Work breakfast event will be held at Crow Canyon Country Club, 711 Silver Lake Drive, Danville, CA 94526 on Tuesday, February 13, 2006. A full buffet breakfast is served starting at 7:00am (Mass is offered at 6:30am at the same location.) Cost is $25 for members and $32 for non-members. To register visit http://www.catholicsatwork.org/EventDesc.aspx.
In his book, Heroic Leadership, Lowney talks about four qualities he sees as essential to Jesuit leadership style; self-awareness, ingenuity, love and heroism. The Jesuits are a 450-year-old organization that grappled successfully with challenges similar to those faced by companies today. Lowney will share his perspective on how the application of these four principles helps with the application of Christian values in today's workplace. While these principles clearly set the foundation for successful corporate leadership, when applied to individuals, these principles define personal leadership.
"The very last thing the Jesuits would have considered themselves to be was leadership pundits," said Chris Lowney, "Instead of talking about leadership, they lived it."
"It is uncanny how the lessons from 450 years ago are completely relevant in today's workplace," said Tom Platner, president of Catholics@Work. "In addition to reading Chris' book, an investment of time that will surely deliver a rich, personal return, hearing Chris at the Catholics@Work event and being able to interact with him will provide an even greater return."
Prior to joining J.P. Morgan, Lowney was a Jesuit seminarian for seven years. During that time, he taught and studied at Jesuit institutions in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. He is a summa cum laude graduate of Fordham University, where he also received his M.A. and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He is holder of honorary Doctoral degrees from Marymount Manhattan University and from the University of Great Falls. Lowney serves on the Board of Directors of Nativity Middle School and on the Board of Regents of St. Peter's College.
