What is Leadership Coaching and Do You Need it?
While learning leadership skills is something that everyone can learn, not everyone is born with the natural ability. This is ok though, because with some help and guidance anyone can become a great leader. One of the methods used to teach people most effectively is leadership coaching. We recommend this method because it allows leaders to work one-on-one with someone who helps them develop their individual skills in order to achieve the best results possible. In simplistic terms, leadership coaching is the process of working with someone to help determine your strengths and weaknesses in terms of being a leader. Obviously, you will still want to work on your strengths a small amount so that you continue growth overall. However, your primary focus in leadership coaching should be to improve the areas where you need help developing. For example, if you are good at managing projects but your people skills are lacking, then you would want your leadership coaching to focus mainly around developing good people skills. Part of the hardest part of leadership coaching is to find the best coach for your situation. Much as a figure skater would never hire a baseball coach for their personal coach, you would not want to hire a leadership coach for a restaurant if you sell insurance. You want to make sure that your coach has the same types of skills you do, preferably with hands on experience themselves. This will give you an advantage, and we recommend spending the time to find the best coach possible. Do not rush through this process. To determine if you are really ready to embark into leadership coaching there are some things that you should consider. First is, are you willing to allow someone to give you constructive criticism and feedback? If the answer is no, then this may not be a good idea for you at the current time. Second is, can you afford the time and money that leadership coaching costs. While it is an investment that some companies will pay for saving the financial burden, you must still devote time to improving or it is a waste of time and money. Third, do you have the support of your co-workers, subordinates, and bosses? If people are supporting you then you are much more inclined to improve yourself. Fourth, do you feel as if you have something that you want to work towards improving? If you have a leadership goal that you really want to work towards then leadership coaching could be the perfect learning opportunity for you. Lastly, are you willing to give up your ideas about leadership and embrace new ideas, beliefs, habits and even attitudes? If the answer is no, then leadership coaching is not for you. If the answer is yes, then you would do well with the coaching. If you have decided to proceed with leadership coaching your next task is to select the best leadership coach for your exact needs. We recommend asking for recommendations from your bosses to see if there is someone who has worked within your company before. Also, check with places such as the International Association of Coaches (IAC) or the Worldwide Association of Business Coaches (WABC) for references of people in your area. We recommend you carefully screen all potential coaches and look for someone whom you feel very comfortable with. Also, insist upon references that you can check out. You also want to find out what tools and strategies the coach uses. If your ideas do not mesh then you, need to find a new coach. If you are not comfortable with your coach, you will not improve. Choose your coach very carefully for the best results possible.
